12/12 Friday Finds

Friday Finds

Friday Finds 12-12-14Are you guys getting tired of all the Christmas talk?  I’m not at all, but I realize it’s probably all you’re seeing and hearing about everywhere, and maybe like me you’re craving just a little change of scenery, so it felt right to do a Friday Finds post today.  Still, a couple of today’s finds are Christmas projects (ha), but they’re SO good and unique that I had to share.  I’m pretty sure you’ll love them.

Lace Up Ballet FlatsI’m a big fan of A Pair and a Spare DIY.  A lot of the DIYs are fashion related, like these adorable lace up ballet flats.  I feel like fashion DIY isn’t something that comes naturally to me, but I’d love to explore that category more.

pink chairI’m generally not a fan of pink, but this chair caught my attention.  Maybe it’s the way it looks with that Orangerie print pillow or the bold black and white rug, but I’ve never been so attracted to a pink chair before.  Would I prefer it in a royal blue, though?  A million times yes.

Scandinavian tree garlandI LOVE Scandinavian style, so this Scandinavian tree garland is something I’d definitely want to try.  What really makes it better though is Aileen’s amazing style.  She has a sharp eye for beautiful things with charm, which is already clear just from this glimpse of her mantel styling.

monogrammed keyringsFor a while I’ve been wanting to try stamping leather!  I love the simplicity of these DIY leather key rings, and they’d for sure make beautiful handmade gifts.

gallery wallEmily Henderson dominates gallery walls, and she shared a most helpful guide on hanging a gallery wall.  Tangent- I just about died when I saw that she pinned my ornament DIY earlier this week.

Moroccan Tree SkirtVery rarely do I audibly gasp at something I see on the internet.  This was one of those rare occasions.  I’m crazy obsessed with this Morroccan wedding blanket inspired tree skirt.  You can tell that Gwen put so much love and expertise into this project, from the amazing choice of embellishments to the precise techniques she used.  It’s perfect.

MAN that felt good to casually just chat about things and step away from the holidays for a second, which by the way are already going by lighting fast, right??  More than before I’m consciously trying to slow down, starting this weekend with celebrating my mom’s birthday and tackling the messes in my apartment.  If you came over right now, you wouldn’t be able to walk around without stepping on something I’m working on.  It’ll be such a relief to get things tidied up and sit down with a cup of hot chocolate after.  Ugh, yes, I can’t wait!!!

Enjoy your weekend, my loves.  See you back here on Monday <3.

DIY Boxwood and Pinecone Gift Topper

DIY Pine Cone and Boxwood Gift Toppers

Within my piles of crafty holiday messes, this easier than easy idea was born: recycle craft leftovers into gift toppers.  Seriously, you can make anything into a gift topper, especially if it’s left over from some other holiday project, like these pine cones left over from my pine cone garland, or these boxwood branches left over from a DIY that’s yet to come ;).

It’s so so simple, and maybe I don’t even have to explain it since it’s not a new concept at all, but the point is that you can make this work with whatever materials you have on hand by following these easy steps.

BoxwoodI tied a boxwood branch onto the gift with string.  So far so good.

glueNext, I applied hot glue onto the bottom of a pine cone, then placed it on top of where the boxwood branch and ribbon intersected.

Paired with a bold, graphic wrapping paper like this, these classic holiday materials look a little more fresh and updated, no?

Any greens would work, like some branches from your Christmas tree, or holly, or maybe some rosemary, whatever!  Instead of pinecones, you could use ornaments, or classic gift bows, mini bottle brush trees, pom poms, anything cute you’ve got lying around, really.  The options and combos are interesting to think about, aren’t they?

Hopefully that gives you some ideas to get started on some simple and beautiful wrapping.  Are you done shopping for gifts yet?  Yea, me neither.

Gold Christmas Tree

Skinny Christmas tree with large gold ornaments. Great for big impact in a small space!

Each year, I say I’m going to get a big, fat, beautiful, REAL tree and decorate the hell out of it with 10,000 lights and a bajillion ornaments.

This is not that year.

In fact, I think as long as I’m here in this apartment, I’m sticking to the smaller and simpler stuff, because even right now I have NO idea where I’m going to store these ornaments once the holidays are over, which could be a decent excuse for me to keep this tree out as long as possible for “storage” purposes.

I did consider doing a real, mini tree to at least participate in wintery, piney smells (that’ll be next year FOR SURE), but my mom had this extra tree for me, and I took it in a heartbeat.  Just like that, Christmas is saved, because y’all know I’m dumping this tree back at mom’s house after the holidays to free up precious space in my little apartment.

Skinny Christmas tree with large gold ornaments. Great for big impact in a small space!Really though, I love this tree.  It’s the perfect size for my place, and reminds me of a gigantic bottle brush tree since it’s on the skinnier side.  I would’ve loved to add some sort of tree topper, but I couldn’t find one that I liked but I’m a rebel, so I’m going without one this year, and I’m really liking it.

Christmas tree with gold ornaments. Use a fur throw as a simple tree skirt!I was going to keep things really simple and only put up the big, gold ornaments, but then I made these black, white, and gold ornaments, realized I didn’t have enough of them, then pulled out some white and gold ornaments from last year to fill in more of the gaps.  It all ended up working out better than I thought while still keeping simple.  Win!

Skinny Christmas tree with large gold ornaments. Great for big impact in a small space! As much as the tree, I loved placing all the little details surrounding it.  The tree skirt is actually just a fur throw c/o PBteen that I bunched up around the base of the tree, and the fur pillow underneath the gift is also c/o PBteen.  I’ve been in a particularly furry mood lately, and I always find it to be a welcome texture in any space, so for good measure, I added in my beloved fur stool.  The candle holders on top are also from Target.  Gift wrapping is still to come!!

Did you go fake or real with your tree this year?  I seriously considered getting a second, mini tree to indulge my craving for a real tree, but thinking about the extra care, space, lights and ornaments I’d have to get for it was stressing me out.  It’s already such a stressful season as it is, isn’t it??  So I’m putting my foot down, keeping things simple, and making room to enjoy the holidays more than stress out over them.  Although, I really am still open to that mini tree if the moment is right…

DIY Black, White, and Gold Ornaments

Black white and gold ornamentsLast week I announced that we’d be revealing our mystery supply challenge ornaments today, right now, it’s here!  I hinted at what my color scheme would be, but you guys really didn’t need that at all to guess what I’d be doing, right??

Here’s a little refresher if anyone is confused about what’s going.  Each participant in the mystery supply challenge was given the same list of supplies to create ornaments, and any additional supplies desired could be used.  It’s definitely inspired by the TV show Chopped, minus the competition part- this is just for pure, creative fun!

Here are the required supplies for the challenge.

Materials:
– 1 pack of clear glass/plastic ornaments
– 1 Sharpie paint pen, any color (I used gold, naturally!)
– 1 bag of faux snow
– 1 roll of ribbon, any color and width (I used black in 1/8″ width)

The challenge allowed the use of any additional materials, so I added the following:
gold spray paint
painters tape
-aluminum foil
Mod Podge
-3/8″ black ribbon

Creating a gold-dipped look is something I really like to do (y’all know me) but I knew the Sharpie paint pen wouldn’t be as clean as I wanted, so gold spray paint was for sure going to be necessary.

TapingI taped the ornament at about the half way point, then covered the rest of the bottom with aluminum foil.  I sprayed 2-3 light coats of gold spray paint across the top of the ornament, including the cap, then removed the tape and aluminum foil.

gold paintSide note: I get asked a lot how I create straight and clean paint lines, and part of my answer is that I don’t.  You can see above it’s not perfectly straight, and my point is that it’s ok!  Especially with what I’ll be showing next with the ribbon.

ribbon 1I glued on the 1/8″ black ribbon down the side of the ornament, dabbing Mod Podge with a Q-tip at the start of the ribbon, the middle, and the end of the ribbon so that it came around back to the top again, which is where I cut the ribbon.

Ribbon glued to ornamentsI did this in a radial design, meaning all strips of ribbon intersected at the same spot at the bottom of the ornament (I’ll show a shot of that soon).

faux snowNext, I used a funnel to pour faux snow into the ornament.  The type of snow I used wasn’t fine at all, so I repeatedly jabbed a chopstick (so Asian) down the funnel to help it all get into the ornament.

Sharpie polka dotsOn the 3/8″ black ribbon, I dotted on the gold, Sharpie paint pen to create a polka dot pattern, then tied the ribbon into a bow on each ornament.

Black white and gold ornamentThe faux snow was the material I was most not looking forward to because I didn’t think it looked that great, but it ended up giving a subtle, icy effect and it isn’t as terrible as I thought it would be.  They’re hanging here from my Christmas tree, which I’ll be showing you guys very soon!

What’d you guys think of this challenge?  Would you have done some of the same things I did?

Go ahead and check out all the other ideas for this challenge from the rest of the participants.  I know you guys are dying to see them all!

Gift Guide: Handmade Goods

Gift Guide for Handmade Goods

Yes, everything in this gift guide is handmade, which was SO fun for me to put together because it’s always exciting to discover those one-of-a-kind items you can’t get just anywhere.  On top of that, supporting fellow makers is something I really believe in doing and is part of the movement for shopping small businesses.  While it not only feels good to buy things that were personally handmade with so much love, you’re bound to find some especially unique items by shopping small.

Take a look, admire the creativity, and browse around these shops to see if there’s something special you’d gift to someone (or yourself!) this season.
